Team Meeting

We will have our first team meeting at 7:30pm on Monday, October 6th, in Room 209A in the HUB.  The meeting will cover a wide range of topics like the goals of the club, schedule for the year, and developing bike advocacy programs.  It is also the best time to pay dues and become a member.

Meet-the-Team Ride

This Saturday, September 27th, is the first team ride of the year.  This is a great chance to meet current members and check out what Husky Cycling is all about.  Riders of all skill levels and interest are welcome; the ride will be at conversational pace and have a no-drop policy.  Along the ride, there will be a couple stops and points to turn around so people can cater the ride to their schedule.

We will meet at 10am at the north end of the HUB.  There will also be another ride on Sunday, September 28th, at the same time and place, as well as every subsequent Saturday and Sunday.

Husky Cycling presents “Remember 2 Breathe”!

This Friday, September 19th, Husky Cycling presents “Remember 2 Breathe” by Evan Schmitt.  The documentary provides an inside look at the people who make up the sport of cycling, from the grassroots to top-tier racing.

The screening begins at 7pm in the Walker Ames Room (Room 225) in Kane Hall, located on the north side of the University of Washington’s Red Square.  $10 for entry and refreshments; $15 for entry, refreshments, and beer with proper ID.  Everyone is welcome!

September Announcement

September, and the start of the school year, is the time to kick-off another year of Husky Cycling!

We’ll be launching the Fall season with two events:

On Friday, September 19th, (two weeks from today!) Husky Cycling be screening a documentary made by team member Evan Schmitt.  There will be food and drinks, as well as a chance to meet other team members and members of the general Seattle cycling community.  7pm in the Walker-Ames Room in Kane Hall off of Red Square.  A flyer is attached; feel free to pass it along to friends–everyone is welcome.

On Saturday, September 27th, we’ll have our first meet-the-team ride.  We’ll leave from the north end of the HUB at 10am.  It will be a no-drop ride and the pace will be conversational.  This is a great chance to (re)connect with new and old friends and find out what the club is all about.

Looking ahead, we’ll have a general team meeting in October to discuss the coming year, including kit orders, in more detail.  We’ll also be starting week-day training rides in October.  More on this to come.

Finally, I want to pass along a new, great resource for cycling in our area: http://www.cyclingnw.com/

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.  koski[at]u.washington.edu

Requesting Volunteers!

Posted by Taylor:

I’m looking for a few people willing to volunteer a couple hours this weekend during Cascade Bicycle Club’s annual Ride Seattle to Vancouver and Party (www.cascade.org/EandR/rsvp/index.cfm).

Similar to what Husky Cycling does for the STP, we are running the bike return here in Seattle on Sunday, August 17th. The RSVP Bike Coral will be in Magnuson Park near CBC/Cycle U headquarters. We will basically be unloading/organizing bikes and returning them to their proud (and tired) owners.

We need about 5-8 people to help out from 3pm until 5-ish. We will be taking the group out for food/drink after the event, so regardless of whether you are a new or returning to Husky Cycling, this is a great opportunity to come hang out and meet some people in the local cycling community. Please email me if you are available to come help out for an hour or two. Thanks!

Summer Annoucement

We just wanted to take a brief moment and thank all of you who were involved in Husky Cycling this past year. Once again we had several new riders join the team, a good number of whom got their feet wet in the whole bike racing scene, with notable success too! Throughout the summer there will continue to be rides posted on our email list (or feel free to post your own) and once things pick back up in the fall, we will resume weekend team rides. Plus there are several road/track races throughout the summer to keep your legs/lungs burning.

This fall as we welcome new and returning Husky Cyclists we will be looking for some individuals to take more of a leadership role with the club. If you think you might be interested in helping out, please email the officers at uwcyclingofficers[at]u.washington.edu. FOR ALL CLUB MEMBERS, if you hear/know of someone who is interested in sponsorship opportunities with Husky Cycling, please feel free to contact us. If you consider the diversity of our current sponsors, nothing is impossible.

Additionally throughout the summer we will be working towards establishing a cyclocross team for the fall racing series. We will be putting together a bicycle order and perhaps a clothing order in time for the cyclocross season. Stay tuned to our mailing list and website for more info to come.

Lastly we still have some volunteer opportunities for our annual STP Bike Coral in July. Even if you are new to UW/Husky Cycling, this is a great opportunity to meet some current club members. We will be putting together a big feast to thank our volunteers for their time, please stay tuned for more details. If you have any questions regarding this event, please email Taylor (leisch[at]u.washington.edu) or Matt (pband[at]u.washington.edu).

Congratulations to those who are graduating tomorrow and for those who are gone for the summer, we look forward to seeing you back in the fall.

Husky Cycling

A Great Season

The members of the Husky Cycling team thank our generous sponsors and private donors for all their help and contributions this past season. As a team, we’ve had a great time traveling around Washington, Oregon, and Idaho and racing our bicycles in the rain, sun, and sometimes… snow.

The State Championship Omnium in Idaho was a blast. In the Men’s C race, Paul rode to 3rd place with his teammates, Noah and Tom, earning 5th and 6th respectively. Later that day in the Men’s C team time trial, Noah, Paul, Jordan, and Tom showed no remorse and won first place, with each of them earning a State Championship Gold Medal for their valiant ride. In the Men’s B road race, Danny and Joe placed in the top 10 and the Men’s B TTT team missed the bronze by 20 seconds.

Important:

Now that the collegiate racing season is over, many of our members race USCF sanctioned racing events on the weekends. In effect, there will be no official group rides on the weekends until Fall quarter. However, many members use the UWracing email list to call out rides during the Spring and Summer. If you’re interested in joining Husky Cycling, please subscribe to the list and email one of the officers on the contact page. At the beginning of Fall quarter, an annoucement will be made on this website as well as the UWracing list about weekend rides. The team will also have a booth at Dawg Daze in September.

Collegiate Racing Report

Good ol’ Winter has working overtime. This season, two of the races were canceled due to snow: Western’s renown Northshore Circuit Race and MSU’s epic Bobcat classic road race. It’s unfortunate because these teams host the events because they serve as major fund-raisers. Next weekend the team heads out to Pullman and Idaho to compete at the NWCCC championships. At this point, it’s destined to be an assemblage of race deprived racers with really restless legs!

There have been some great results this season. Lisa has been a dominating force in the Women’s B’s, winning the first road race in Eugene and consistently placing in the top 5 throughout the season. Kelly came out for the PSU road race with gun’s blazing, finishing just behind Lisa for third place. And Kristina also placed third at the rainy and slick OSU criterium. At the Husky Cycling criterium at Seward Park, Tony and Dan Harm powered themselves to wins in their respected categories. In the CWU road race, Tony launched a harrowing attack and crushed the field, powering himself to a glorious solo finish. In the Men’s B road race, Danny out-sprinted the field and won his first race ever. In the Men’s C’s, Jordan held on and earned a respectable 3rd. As for team time trials, the Men’s C squad has aced the competition several times, while the Men’s B squad continues to place consistently in the top 3. After the season, full results will be posted on the results page.

As always, the Husky Cycling thanks our generous sponsors and donors for their unwaivering support. Without them, none of this would be possible!

News and Updates

The calendar feature has been updated and now includes weekday team rides. The weekday rides will have one or two husky cycling officers leading them. Coach Galen has recommended that new and returning racers continue with base miles until the end of January–slow and steady rides with attention to on the bike posture, breathing, and cadence. The more slow riding you get in, the better your aerobic capacity, meaning you’ll be able to train harder and become faster as the collegiate season progresses. At least that’s the gist of it. For a more detailed explanation, contact Galen or post a question on the new team blog…

You’re probably wondering, ”what team blog?” Well, I have created a new community team blog and you can find the link above in the navigation menu or below this paragraph. Any team member can register and post topics about cycling and life. For more details, see the first post on the team blog page.
